King Vessavaṇa said to the Buddha,\n“Sir, some high spirits have confidence in the Buddha,\nsome do not.\nSome middling spirits have confidence in the Buddha,\nsome do not.\nSome low spirits have confidence in the Buddha,\nsome do not.\nBut mostly the spirits don’t have confidence in the Buddha.\nWhy is that?\nBecause the Buddha teaches them to refrain from killing living creatures, stealing, lying, sexual misconduct, and consuming intoxicants of beer, wine, and liquor.\nBut mostly they don’t refrain from such things.\nThey don’t like that or approve of it.\nSir, there are disciples of the Buddha who frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest that are quiet and still, far from the madding crowd, remote from human settlements, and fit for retreat.\nThere dwell high spirits who have no confidence in the Buddha’s dispensation.\nTo give them confidence, may the Buddha please learn the Āṭānāṭiya protection for the guarding, protection, safety, and comfort of the monks, King Kuvera, dear sir,\nhas a capital named Visāṇā,\nwhich is why the great king\nis called ‘Vessavaṇa’.\nSearching, they shine:\nTatolā, Tattalā, Tatotalā,\nOjasi, Tejasi, Tatojasi,\nSūra, Rājā, Ariṭṭha, and Nemi.\nThere is a lake there too named Dharaṇī,\nwhence the clouds rain forth,\nand the rains disperse.\nThere is a hall there too named Sālavatī,\nwhere the spirits frequent.\nThere the trees are ever in fruit,\nwith many different flocks of birds.\nPeacocks and herons call out there,\nand the sweet cuckoos too.\nOne bird cries out ‘Live, live!’,\nanother ‘Lift up your heart!’\nThere are cocks and kookaburras,\nand in the wood the woodpeckers.\nThe parrots and mynah cry out there,\nand the ‘little stick-boy’ birds.\nKuvera’s pond of rushes\nis lovely all the time.\nFrom here that is the northern quarter,\nso the people say.\nThat quarter is warded\nby a great king, glorious,\nthe lord of spirits;\nhis name is Kuvera.\nHe delights in song and dance,\nhonored by the
