He is violent, bloody-handed, a hardened killer, merciless to living beings.\nHe has laid waste to villages, towns, and countries.\nHe is constantly murdering humans, and he wears their fingers as a necklace.\nPeople travel along this road only after banding closely together in groups of ten, twenty, thirty, forty, or fifty.\nStill they meet their end by Aṅgulimāla’s hand.”\nBut when they said this, the Buddha went on in silence.\nFor a second time …\nand a third time, they urged the Buddha to turn and shield, fastened his bow and arrows, and followed behind the Buddha.\nBut the Buddha used his psychic power to will that Aṅgulimāla could not catch up with him no matter how hard he tried, even though the Buddha kept walking at a normal speed.\nThen Aṅgulimāla thought,\n“Oh lord, how incredible, how amazing!\nPreviously, even when I’ve chased a speeding elephant, horse, chariot or deer, I’ve always caught up with them.\nBut I can’t catch up with this ascetic no matter how hard I try, even though he’s walking at a normal speed.”\nHe stood still and said,\n“Stop, stop, ascetic!”\n“I’ve stopped, Aṅgulimāla—now you stop.”\nThen Aṅgulimāla thought,\n“These ascetics who follow the Sakyan speak the truth.\nYet while walking the ascetic says:\n‘I’ve stopped, Aṅgulimāla—now you stop.’\nWhy don’t I ask him about mahesi,\nYo satthā lokassa sadevakassa;\n“Tamehi bhikkhū”ti tadā avoca,\nEseva tassa ahu bhikkhubhāvoti.","en":"Then he addressed the Buddha in verse:\n“While walking, ascetic, you say ‘I’ve stopped.’\nAnd I have stopped, but you tell me I’ve not.\nI’m asking you this, ascetic:\nhow is it you’ve stopped and I have not?”\n“Aṅgulimāla, I have forever stopped—\nI’ve laid aside violence toward all creatures.\nBut you can’t stop yourself from harming living creatures;\nthat’s why I’ve stopped, but you have not.”\n“Oh, at long last a renowned great seer,\nan ascetic has followed me into this deep wood.\nNow that I’ve heard your verse on Dhamma,\nI shall live without evil.”\nWith these words, the bandit hurled his sword and weapons\ndown a cliff into an abyss.\nHe venerated the Holy One’s feet,\nand requested the going forth right away.\nThen the Buddha, the compassionate great seer,\nthe Teacher of the world with its gods,\nsaid to him, “Come, monk!”\nAnd with that he He bowed and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him,\n“What is it, Great King? And that he was refraining from killing living creatures, stealing, and lying; that he was eating in one part of the day, and was chaste, ethical, and of good character. What would you do to him?”\n“I would bow to him, rise in his presence, or offer him a seat. I’d invite him to accept robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. Buddha’s teaching!\nMay even my enemies associate with those good men\nwho establish others in the Dhamma!\nMay even my enemies hear Dhamma at the right time,\nfrom those who teach acceptance,\npraising acquiescence;\nand may they follow that path!\nFor then they’d never wish harm\nupon myself or others.\nHaving arrived at ultimate peace,\nthey’d look after creatures firm and frail.\nFor while irrigators guide water,\nfletchers bend arrows straight,\nand carpenters bend timber straight,\nthe astute tame themselves.\nSome tame by using the rod,\nsome with goads, and some with whips.\nBut the unaffected one tamed me\nwithout rod or sword.\nMy name is ‘Harmless’,\nthough I used to be harmful.\nThe name I bear today is true,\nfor I do no harm to anyone.\nI used to be a simpletons\ndevote themselves to negligence.\nBut the wise protect diligence\nas their best treasure.\nDon’t devote yourself to negligence,\nor delight in erotic intimacy.\nFor if you’re diligent and
