need garlic, I’ll supply it.”\nAnd he had told his field-keeper,\n“If the nuns come, give two or three bulbs to each nun.”\nOn that occasion they were holding a celebration in Sāvatthī,\nand the garlic was used up as soon as it arrived there.\nJust then the nuns went to that lay follower and said,\n“We need garlic.”\n“Venerables, there isn’t any.\nAs soon as the garlic arrives, it’s used up.\nPlease go to the field.”\nThe nun Thullanandā went to the field, and not having any sense of moderation she took a large amount of garlic.\nThe field-keeper complained and criticized them,\n“How could the nuns not have any sense of moderation and take a large amount of garlic?”\nThe nuns heard the complaints of that field-keeper,\nand the nuns of few desires complained and criticized her,\n“How could Venerable Thullanandā not have any sense of moderation and take a large amount of garlic?” …\n“Is it true, monks, that the nun Thullanandā did this?”\n“It’s true, sir.”\nThe Buddha rebuked her,\n“How could the nun Thullanandā not have any sense of moderation and take a large amount of garlic?\nThis will affect people’s confidence …” …\nand after giving a teaching he addressed
