Soon afterwards he had the Sangha gathered and questioned Channa:\n“Is it true, Channa, that you did this?”\n“It’s true, sir.”\nThe Buddha rebuked him …\n“Foolish man, how could you do this?\nPeople perceive trees as conscious.\nThis will affect people’s confidence …” …\n“And, monks, this training rule should be recited like this:","pi":"Tena samayena buddho bhagavā kosambiyaṁ viharati large dwelling:\none with a sponsoring owner is what is meant.\nDwelling:\nplastered inside or plastered outside or plastered both inside and outside.\nBuilds:\nbuilding it himself or having it built.\nWith a sponsoring owner:\nthere is another owner, either a woman or a man, either a householder or a monastic.\nIntended for himself:\nfor his own use.\nHe must have monks approve a site:\nthe monk who wants to build a dwelling should clear a site. He should then approach the Sangha, arrange his upper robe over one shoulder, pay respect at the feet of the senior monks, squat on his heels, raise his joined palms, and say:\n“Venerables, I want to build a large dwelling with a sponsoring owner and intended for myself.\nI request the Sangha to inspect the site for that dwelling.”\nHe should make his request a second\nand a third time.\nIf the whole Sangha is able to inspect the site, they should all go.\nIf the whole Sangha is unable to inspect the site,\nthen those monks there who are competent and capable—who know where harm will be done and where no harm will be done, who know what is meant by space on all sides and a lack of space on all sides—should be asked and then appointed.\n“And, monks, they should be appointed like this.\nA competent and capable monk should inform the Sangha:\n‘Please, venerables, I ask the Sangha to listen.\nMonk so-and-so wants to build a large dwelling with a sponsoring owner and intended for himself.\nHe is requesting the Sangha to inspect the site for that dwelling.\nIf the Sangha is ready, it should appoint monks so-and-so and so-and-so to inspect the site for the dwelling of monk so-and-so.\nThis is the motion.\nPlease, venerables, I ask the Sangha to listen.\nMonk so-and-so wants to build a large dwelling with a sponsoring owner and intended for himself.\nHe is requesting the Sangha to inspect the site for that dwelling.\nThe Sangha appoints monks so-and-so and so-and-so to inspect the site for the dwelling of monk so-and-so.\nAny monk who approves of appointing monks so-and-so and so-and-so to inspect the site for the dwelling of monk so-and-so should remain silent.\nAny monk who doesn’t approve should speak up.\nThe Sangha has appointed monks so-and-so and so-and-so to inspect the site for the dwelling of monk so-and-so.\nThe Sangha approves and is therefore silent.\nI will remember it thus.’\nThe appointed monks should go and inspect the site for the dwelling\nto find out if any harm will be done and if it has space on all sides.\nIf harm will be done or it lacks space on all sides, they should say,\n‘Don’t build here.’\nIf no harm will be done and it has space on all sides, they should inform the Sangha:\n‘No harm will be done and it has space on all sides.’\nThe monk who wants to build the dwelling should then approach the Sangha, arrange for the dwelling of monk so-and-so.\nThe Sangha approves and is therefore silent.\nI will remember it thus.’”\nWhere harm will be done:\nit is the abode of ants, termites, rats, snakes, scorpions, centipedes, elephants, horses, lions, tigers, leopards, bears, or hyenas, or any other animal;\nor it is bordering on a field of grain, a field of vegetables, a place of slaughter, a place of execution, a charnel ground, a park, a royal property, an elephant stable, a horse stable, a prison, a bar, a slaughterhouse, a street, a crossroads, a public meeting hall, or a cul-de-sac—\nthis is called “where harm will be done”.\nWhich lacks space on all sides:\nit is not possible to go around it with a yoked cart, or to go all the way around it with a ladder—\nthis is called “which lacks space on all sides”.\nWhere no harm will be done:\nit is not the abode of ants …\nit is not bordering on … a cul-de-sac—\nthis is called “where no harm will be done”.\nWhich has space on all sides:\nit is possible to go around it with a yoked cart, or to go all the way around it with a ladder—\nthis is called “which has space on all sides”.\nA large dwelling:\none with a sponsoring owner site:\nif the site for the dwelling has not been approved through a legal procedure consisting of one motion and three announcements, and he then builds a dwelling or has one built, then for the effort there is an act of wrong conduct.\nWhen there is one piece left to complete the dwelling, he commits a serious offense.\nWhen the last piece is finished, he commits an offense entailing
