story\nAt one time when the Buddha was staying at Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove,\nthe monks Mettiya and Bhūmajaka were descending from the Vulture Peak when they saw two goats copulating.\nThey said to each other,\n“Let’s give the he-goat the name Dabba the Mallian\nand the she-goat the name Mettiyā the nun.\nWe can then say,\n‘Previously we spoke of what we had heard,\nbut now we’ve seen Dabba copulating with the nun Mettiyā.’”\nThey then gave them those names\nand told the monks,\n“Previously we spoke of what we had heard,\nbut now we’ve seen Dabba copulating with the nun Mettiyā.”\nThe monks replied,\n“Don’t say such things.\nVenerable Dabba wouldn’t do that.”\nThe monks told the Buddha.\nSoon afterwards the Buddha had the Sangha gathered and questioned Dabba:\n“Dabba, do you remember doing as these monks say?”\n“Sir, you know what I’m like.”\nA second\nand a third time the Buddha asked\nthe same question\nand got the same response.\nHe then said, “Dabba, the Dabbas don’t give such evasive answers.\nIf it was done by you, say so;\nif it wasn’t, then say that.”\n“Since I was born, sir, I don’t recall having sexual intercourse even in a dream, let alone when
